EMD SD-40, Conrail (CR 6284).
I started with an undecorated Kato SD-40 and proceeded to backdate it to a first generation version
of the unit. The model was disassembled, the handbrake recess on the short hood was
filled and sanded smooth, and a new rear deck brake stand was formed from Evergreen
styrene. A styrene roof vent was added behind the dynamic brake fans, and a resin
casting of a cab vent molded from a Kato GP-50 cab added to the SD-40 cab. A
Pennsy-style signal box was added to the deck in front of the cab. The body was
painted in Accu-Paint Conrail blue, and decorated with Micro-Scale decals. The cab
window frames were hand painted in aluminum, and fuel tank details hand painted in red.
Marker lights were highlighted in stencil black, aluminum and Testors taillight red.
Micro-Trains couplers were added, as well as a front plow fashioned from cardstock.
This diesel is paired with the later version unit number 6305.
