50-foot boxcar w/plug doors, Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O 22618).
The Micro-Trains (nee Kadee) collectors in the model railroad club always used to cringe when I
ran this car around the layout. It was one from the infamous batch that was painted high gloss
blue with the flat yellow door. Because of this, the yellow paint easily flaked off on the
majority of the cars. When Kadee realized this, they stopped production and destroyed the cars.
A handful of cars were shipped to some dealers before the flaw was realized, and I was fortunate to
acquire three of them. Since I had more than one, I had no crisis of conscience in weathering one!
I started by disassembling the car, and spraying the body with Testor's Dulcoat. Not only did this
seal the yellow paint, it provided an excellent base for the pastel weathering. Light blue and
gray pastels were applied to the sides and roof, and dark gold pastels to the doors, to weather the car.
To simulate the cushioned underframe, extended coupler platforms were formed from styrene, painted
black and screwed to the underframe. Body-mounted couplers were screwed to the extended
platforms. The Bettendorf trucks were replaced by roller bearing trucks with low-flange
wheelsets. The trucks and couplers were weathered with dark gray pastels to bring out the
details. The car was assembled, then sprayed with a light clearcoat to seal the weathering.
