52-foot wood reefer, Railway Express Agency (REX 383).
This is the Fine N Scale resin kit based on the REA express reefer. The kit was
assembled according to the instructions. The brass brakewheel was formed into a dish
shape by placing it on a piece of corrugated cardboard and pressing the center of the brakewheel
with a ballpoint pen. I washed the body
in soap and water, and let the body soak in Fantastik to insure the removal of
all mold release residue. The body was airbrushed in Accu-Paint's Hunter Green.
After a day to dry, the body was masked with the wax-like Parafilm M masking film, which
eliminated the need for masking tape and the risk of lifting the existing paint from the resin
body. The roof and ends were airbrushed Stencil Black. Model Die Casting express
reefer trucks with Micro-Trains low-profile wheelsets were used, and Micro-Trains standard
couplers were mounted to the underframe. Decals for the 1940's scheme were applied, and
the car was sealed with a spray of Testors Dullcote. The car was weathered with airbrush
washes of dust and grime.
