FHIX 41034

40-foot steel reefer w/plug door, Fruit Growers Express (FHIX 41034).  This model was a puzzle of parts milled from existing plastic models.  The sides were milled from a Micro-Trains riveted-side mechanical reefer to match the configuration of the prototype, and the Micro-Trains stirrups were attached.  The remainder of the body and underframe are from an Intermountain 40' steel reefer kit with hinged doors, with .040 inches milled off the sides.  Some plastic was milled off the bolsters to allow the model to sit at a prototypical height over the rails.  After the precision cutting was done, all of the parts were pre-painted before being glued together.  Laser-printed custom decals along with Micro-Trains couplers and trucks fitted with Fox Valley wheelsets completed the construction.  The car was then weathered with chalks.  This model was featured in the November/December 2009 issue of N Scale Railroading magazine.
