54-foot mail storage car, ex-troop sleeper, New Haven (NH 3025).
When Micro-Trains released its troop sleeper, I realized the task of creating New Haven's
mail storage cars became easier. I also decided to use stereolithography to make the
rapid prototype masters for the window plugs and new doors. Rubber molds were made
of the parts and duplicates were cast in resin. I drilled out the existing doors,
widened the doorway and shaved the molded grab irons on the sides. The resin castings
were inserted, holes were drilled for new grab irons and wire grab irons were
installed. The wide center stirrup was replaced with a smaller one. I
airbrushed the car in engine black, and applied custom decals. Commonwealth BX trucks
replaced the original Allied trucks. The car was weathered to simulate heavy
usage. This mail storage car is assigned to local service.
The model was featured in the January/February 2005 issue of N Scale Railroading magazine.
