Alco PA-1, New Haven (NH 0766).
The PA-1 units were popular diesels on the New Haven, and the McGinnis red, black and white
scheme the most bold and colorful of liveries. In 1986, I wanted a pair of these units to
pull my mid-1950s Merchants Limited, the railroad's flagship passenger train.
As this is a difficult paintscheme to mass produce, I knew I would have to paint it myself
if I was to have it. I started with two Con-Cor undecorated PA units, and airbrushed
the grills and nose areas with Accu-Paint stencil white. Next, I masked off the nose
and grills, and airbrushed the lower sides with Socony Red. The final step was to mask
the red sides, and airbrush the entire unit stencil black. I used Northeast Decals for
NH Alco McGinnis units for the nose decals, engine numbers and railroad name. Clover
House dry transfers supplied the side heralds. The units were airbrushed with a dust
and grime wash to simulate recently-painted units in regular service. The clear plastic
nose light was replaced with an MV mirrored lense, with a hole drilled in the back to allow
the headlight bulb to shine through. Micro-Trains couplers were utilized in the front,
and Kato couplers in the back. When Con-Cor re-released their
new-mechanism PAs in the mid '90s, I bought some undecorated units, and repowered my
originals. I also utilized the windshield and porthole glass from the newer models.
