New Haven NE5 34-foot steel caboose (NH C524).
This scratchbuilt model is fabricated from a number of mediums. The floor/underframe
and body core are rapid prototype resin parts formed on a ProJet 3000Plus printer at
the XHD resolution, the equivalent of Shapeways FXD. The body inset panels and
roofwalks are etched, either from brass or stainless steel. The ladders, end railings
and steel weight were taken from the Keyser Valley caboose kit by Eastern Seaboard Models.
The grab irons and loop railings at the top of the ladders are phosphor bronze wire.
The roof stanchions are micro eyelets. Evergreen clear styrene for the windows.
Commercial parts used include the smokestack from the International 1945 class NE6
steel caboose by Atlas, #2001 Micro-Trains couplers and Ajax brakewheels, Atlas
leafspring friction-bearing caboose trucks, and Fox Valley metal wheelsets.
Polly Scale water-based paint and Microscale decals, except for the end numbers which
were custom printed on an Alps. The model was sprayed with Dullcote and weathered
with pastels. This model took 1st place in the Rolling Stock, Caboose category of
the model contest at the N-Scale Enthusiast 24th Annual National N Scale Convention
in Kansas City, Kansas in June 2016.
