NH C-410 Close-Up

New Haven NE4 40-foot wood caboose (NH C-410).  This car is a major kitbash of a Micro-Trains 50000-series wood-sheathed caboose.  I disassembled the caboose entirely and put the detail parts to the side.  The body was cut on the short side at the edge of the cupola opening.  The sides were removed from both body pieces up to the underside of the roof and ends.  Four window frames were cut from the sides before they were discarded.  New sides were cut from Evergreen scribed styrene sheets to the proper length, and the old window frames were filed and fitted into the new sides.  The roof was extended with smooth sheet styrene.  The angled sides of the cupola were scored with a X-Acto blade under the roofline, and bent down to form straight sides.  The new cupola was installed, new roofwalk bracing was added as well as a new roofwalk.  The smokestack was relocated closer to the cupola, and a hand-turned brass vent was added.  New side grabirons were formed from 12-mil brass wire.  The underframe was cut and stretched with thick styrene.  Low-flange wheelsets replaced the standard wheels.  The car body was painted a light boxcar red, and decorated with Clover House dry transfers.  The car was airbrushed with Testors Dullcote, weathered with pastels, and sealed with another coat of Dullcote.  This model took the Judge's Award 1st place, and the Popular Vote Award 2nd place, in the Non-Revenue Cars category of the model contest at the N-Trak East RailFun `94 convention in Orlando, Florida in July 1994.  The model subsequently had window glass added and Fox Valley wheelsets installed in 2007, and Fox Valley leafspring trucks in 2015.
