34-foot Northeastern caboose, Conrail (CR 18889).
This brass import was offered by Overland Models, and is based on a Jersey Central
prototype. I started by removing the roofwalk, roof grabirons, coupola grabirons,
and smokestack from the roof, and the upper rungs from the end ladders to update the
model to the 1970s. The body and end railings were airbrushed in Accu-Paint
Conrail Blue, while the roof, underframe and trucks were airbrushed in Stencil Black.
End grabirons were painted in Stencil White. A Micro-Trains smokestack was mounted
on the roof, and Micro-Trains couplers were mounted on the ends. Accu-Cal decals
for Conrail cabooses were applied, and the model was numbered as a former CNJ car.
The decals were lightly drybrushed with thinner to weather them, then the car was
airbrushed lightly with a dirt and grime wash. Finally, the car was drybrushed
lightly with thinner with vertical strokes to simulate rain weathering. The model was
finished in 1990.
